Fat shaming and fit shaming can only exist if you first feel ashamed by who you are or the way you look.
You can’t feel shame without first being ashamed. Hell, some people will psychologically play with people until they feel ashamed. Just so they can relentlessly shame them.
This isn’t just an ‘ignore it’ solution as great in concept. Not so easy in practice.
When I was young, people mocked, ridiculed and belittled me because I was fat and they mock, ridicule and belittle me when I’m as I am today.
Nothing’s changed its just a different group of people (also people are now grown ups which helps a little) and they find different reasons.
When I was overweight I concerned myself with the opinions of others too much but I also didn’t know how to fix a physique that made me unhappy, gave me health issues and restricted me doing sport, which I loved.
I had no control over it. I wasn’t responsible for feeding myself and my parents knew nothing about nutrition. If I said I was hungry they gave me food, like most parents would, I was active as hell but hey, the balance was wrong. The more unhappy I became the more food I ate.
Nowadays I could walk around a trade convention like Bodypower, look at all the shredded physiques and feel insecure as I don’t look like that 24/7. I don’t however and neither do I feel ashamed. I choose the lifestyle I choose to lead, the choices I make with food and training mean my physique is merely a byproduct of all that.
I make choices, educated choices and ones that are in MY best wellbeing.
What they’re prepared to sacrifice I’m not a vice versa. It means we establish a different position that gives us gratification. That’s all.
As an industry we are:
There to give people choices and control over their physical well being.
Here to educate and therefore allow people to make better educated choices.
There to motivate and inspire
There to solve problems for people and allow them to enjoy facets of life inclusive of food, friendships, activities and all else that comes with life.
There to address behaviours and habits that are counterproductive to people’s goals.
There to keep people going and NOT feel ashamed by who they are.
We are not:
Dictators. We don’t get to choose how someone leads their life. We play a role in how they make those choices and if they’re in alignment with what they want from their life. The best training system is one someone does firstly, enjoys and gets results from. Not the one you say is the best. The same is true of nutrition.
Geneticists. We are here to help people get the most from what they’ve got. Very few people that we deal with will genetics ever be the limiting factor in them getting to that point in life that they’re happy with how they look and who they are.
Promoters of the sport of bodybuilding. Goes back to the first point about being a dictator. We are not here to make people live like we want to live.
You want that start a cult do that.
