If you get distracted driving the outcomes never good……
You get distracted in the gym….the same.
People in sport actively try to distract people so they gain an unfair advantage (or fair if it’s within the rules of the sport).
I’m going to use a real life example of someone I frequently get told about as they’re often distracted by me. They have some chip on their shoulder about what I do and have done now for almost 5 years now (perhaps more). Don’t know where it’s came from but it’s provided a perfect example for me to write this piece to hopefully help you.
It’s someone I’ve never followed (as they’d distract me) and someone I’ve actively avoided on social media channels (as again they’d distract me). When someone’s talking about you or making derogatory comments about you or your business that would often be the outcome.
They’d distract you and you’d miss the goal, crash the car or whatever analogous thing you want to apply to it. Maybe that’s their intent I don’t know?
It takes a lot to distract me. I’ve developed a pretty thick skin over the years and frankly I don’t really care what people think. As long as I know what I’m doing with my life is positively affecting people I’m at peace and don’t need anyone affirming that. I’m bad at taking compliments for that same reason but hey ho.
So my point. The person I’m talking about was drawn to my attention for the first time in probably 8-9 months the other week. Someone sent me a FB message saying he was slating one of my articles. I quickly jumped across to see what he was saying……..did I hell.
What I did do was wonder why all of a sudden he’d not been slating me with such frequency. (Someone once said to me he must wake up thinking about me).
Turns out he’d been distracted from being distracted by me.
(If you’re at this moment curious as to why after saying this I’ve then looked at what he’s been doing it’s due to a slight obsession with human behaviour and psychology)
Anyway, turns out he’s been actively documenting some stuff and lo and behold his following and business appeared to have grown (the first time I’d seen this in the 5+ years of him being distracted by me).
Now he’s stopped documenting he’s back to, well, being distracted by me. His cars will be crashing, he’ll be missing his goals and all because of me.
I take no pride in that. Zero, nada, nothing.
I actually feel sorry for him. I’ve inadvertently put his business growth on hold by distracting him with what I’m doing in my world.
You get my point.
Stop getting distracted by things that don’t matter. People that serve no purpose in your world. People who are so engrossed in what you’re doing they’re failing to do anything themselves.
The more distractions in life and business I have the less I progress and enjoy what I’m doing. It’s that simple. Keep your eyes firmly on your own destination, your own goal.
As I get older I become less tolerant, less worried about the trivial. Less concerned by the opinions of people that play no positive role on my life. I have only positive distractions in my life. Things that enhance it. I crash the proverbial cars far less and miss goals far less than ever.
The main reason is not allowing or getting engrossed in futile distractions.
When I first started my career I went 12 years without owning a TV, I’ve never owned a games system. These, based on my childhood I knew would distract me from my goals so I simply removed them.
A pre requisite to focus is a lack of distraction. In the presence of distractions you therefore cannot have focus.
